Healthy Reflections | Meaning of a Word: Baba

بابا

This post is under the blog category of Healthy Reflections. These reflections may be poetic, or simple explorations of different thoughts and ideas.

This post is sharing some thoughts about the word "بابا", or "baba", meaning father or dad in Dari and Farsi languages, as well as in Arabic languages. There may be more languages as well I believe, but I have not done the research for that. It would be interesting to learn how many languages and cultures have used this word.

The reflection that I wanted to share was about the Arabic word "باب", or "baab", meaning "door".

How can these two words be connected in meaning? There is likely a specific connection, but I was thinking the other day, that perhaps our fathers are like a door to knowledge of our own selves: our background, our roots, our identity; "Baab" meaning door, and "baba" meaning dad or father.

In Islam we take the last names of our fathers. How important it is to grow up with our fathers, to respect our fathers, to love our parents and be connected with our own selves.

We have a beautiful religion, Islam, that guides us and protects our hearts and minds. Respect and love for our parents is not only something that will give us peace and fulfilment when we are young, but it will also in adulthood give us peace and fulfilment as we start to develop a greater understanding of their honour and the special places they hold in our own lives.
